Power window motor blows fuses

My driver's side power window motor on my 4Runner blows fuses / circuit breakers when raising the window (unless I grab the glass and pull it up). Also overheats the switch (actually fried my switch). Short of replacing the doors, what's involved with swapping over to manual windows? I'm just done with the whole power window thing.

I haven't done this on a 4runner but it should be pretty simple. If you take the door panel off you will see the factory hole for the crank and mounting locations. You may need a whole new regulator (half moon shaped gear and armature that attaches to the bottom of the glass) or you might be able to simply remove the motor and engage the gear on the manual crank directly. The first option may cost more but either way should be pretty simple. You will need to cut a small hole in the door panel, but likely only the vinyl covering. Often factory door panels will have the cutouts for both options.

The first thing I would do is look at the track the window slides in, there maybe something obstructing the glass or the it might just be dirty. Second, (you'll need to pull the door panel for this one) get a wiring diagram for the window motor, switch and everything involved with the power windows and look for broken wires, tell tale signs of heat, broken connectors and wire damage. With the amount of heat you are getting in the wires would lead me to believe a power wire is touching metal somewhere. Here in colorado we have issues with rodents in the winter time, they like the heat of the engine and they like to chew wires. Other than that, if you want to get rid of the power windows just find some 4runner doors with the crank windows and put um on your truck.

PS: If you do end pulling the door panel, you might want to get some extra plastic clips. You WILL break them. They're 27 years old after all.
