so i started to put power steering fluid instead of atf and the leak has slowed down a lot!! wierd and the whining is not as loud?? any input on why?:hhmm:

In my experience, hydraulic or power steering fluid runs smoother than ATF in Toyota power steering systems.

Kevin, do you have a recommended brand/grade? There's lots of options:
Chevron - Hydraulic Fluids

Thanks, -Steve

I run Mobil DTE 24 light, ISO32, works great here. Have also run standard power steering fluid with good results. On every rig that has switched from ATF, have noticed smoother operation, faster recovery when air is sucked in at angles, less prone to groan when stressed, etc. Mine never had ATF, it went straight from the factory hydraulic fluid to Mobil DTE. In a colder climate, a slightly thinner fluid may help with cold start groan/stiffness?

has anyone used Lucas oils power steering fluid?? how does that work?

i used it in my 60 and wonder if that may be what took out the pump. lucas is thicker than molasses and shortly after putting it in, the pump flat out failed. i normally love lucas, but woudn't use the power steering stuff again.
