I have a 91 lj78 prado. There is a shh shh shh sound coming from what may be the power steering pump berrings? I drew an arrow to the pully in question. What is this?

The steering is a hard pull at the extreme limits leading me further to think its the pump.

Thanks for your help!

Great thanks!

I removed the belt to the ac pump (im not interested in ac where im from and i plan to remove the whole setup to help the rad cool in the summer). The sound is still there, thinking it may be coming from the steering pump or the other pully above it (oil pump?). The steering works much better than it did before (idling). Ill get it in the road to do a better test

Thanks for helping out a newbie;)

look on the power steering belt loop, there should be a pulley with a tensioning screw.
on my 2lt (not 2lte) I can access the pulley from under the truck.
that pulley can be dry or dead.
on mine It has a replaceable bearing, I can look for the skf code.

however, the bearing didn't feel shot, just dry, so I added some grease with a siringe needle and the shhhhh sound disappeared.

not saying thats the fix on your truck, but its easy to inspect that pulley.

mind you, first you release the nut on the middle of the pulley, then you release the long adjusting screw!!!

and you must pay attention to readjust the tension on the ps belt.

The power steer belt uses a Gates - 9345

The idler uses the bearing inside "SKF-6204-2RSJ" which should cross over to "NSK-6204DU"

Bring those part numbers to any parts store to get the bearing and belt.
