Dad gave me an old Poulan S25D chainsaw. It has not been run since the mid 80's that I am aware of. I pulled the exhaust off and the cylinder looks to be good still. As do the rings. The carb is also very clean still. But the fuel line is dead (cracked). Is it worth trying to get it back up and running? It'd be a nice little saw to have around if it would work.

I know the new Poulan saws are pretty much disposable. But I'm hoping that the older ones are worth reviving.. Or, it'll end up being a Haloween prop :D

He also gave me two newer saws that are modern homelite and a Echo. Both look to be brand new, but he said that he had a "guy" look at them and the rings are washed out. So, new piston/ring set most likely, but I have not gotten into them yet..

The Micro S25D is one of the best saws Poulan ever built.

The fuel lines go bad. It is a crazy small line that goes up through the handle assy on the older ones.

When Electrolux bought Beard Poulan it is one saw they kept in the line up. They basically took the saw and painted it Orange and slapped thier logo on it. In 1998 the emmission laws pretty much killed the saw for USA Sales.

In the 1970's they sold for $129.95. When they discontinued them they sold for $249.95.

Can it be fixed? Yes

Is it worth fixing? Only if you are doing the work yourself.

Yeppers, going to do the work myself.

Any other things I should keep my eye open for on it?

Finally got it up and running. now I need to do a little tweaking on the carb settings and make sure the oiler works as it's supposed to.

:)

Echo is frozen solid. 46cc Homelite has spark and 120 psi compression. No clue why it was not working (course I have not tried to start it yet).

Question any reason no to run the 50:1 stihl premix stuff in this saw? IT originally was designed for a 16:1 mis (or 32:1 I can't remember) but have been reading and I believe that Danimal mentioned that it's more the oil that determines the mixture necessary than the machine.

I've ran a bit of the stihl premixed fuel through it already and it runs great..

Edited^ From what I remember..

I've used the 50;1 HP Ultra mix in the old Chrysler outboard with good results.:)

Same recollection I have..

On an outboard?? That has to get expensive fast...

Ohh yeah. I got it running pretty good :)

Now the plastic fuel tack has a micro crack in it that only leaks when the saw is completely assembled. I'm looking at how to plastic weld right now..

Sheesh lol

I'm going to fill the tank with fuel first to make sure the HAZ on the plastic does not make it brittle ;)

That reminds me to get some more butane for my soldering Iron...

All weldered up and no longer leaking. We shall see how long it lasts tho...

I also picked up a poulan 306a today as well for $15.00. It has good spark and compression, but does not draw fuel. I'm going to rip the carb apart and see what's the matter :)

Texas chainsaw massacre anyone??

Dunno about that, I just pulled the muffler (in surprisingly good condition) and the cylinder wall does not look good at all.

Dunno how the compression was running 135...

Might be a good Halloween prop tho :D

My fingers got all numb and tingly just lookin at it.:hillbilly:

Fun score!

Mace should go and cut a full load of wood with his Poulans on a Friday. Saturday will be a recovery day. He will need time for his hands to stop hurting enough to fully open all of his finger. He will also need the entire day to get the ringing in his ears to stop and his hearing to come back.

On Sunday he can go and cut the same amount of wood with his collection of STIHL's. He can start well after breakfast and be done well before lunch. He can then go and play catch with the kids while listening to the radio. His hands will work they way they were intended and he will be able to hear. Lol
