:hhmm:The money saved I can understand, but I look at it like I didnt need the 1000 dollar investment of a fridge in the back so I saved money getting a cooler that will last 10 -15 yrs.
There is no reason an Igloo or Coleman can't last 10 years, I have the coolers to prove it.

obviously a good way to help with battery run down on a fridge or cooler is to have a lot of cold mass in there. I always add cold water bottles to fill the fridge up. They get colder when the fridge is going off a running engine, at no cost to the battery. Even better, if needed I start with superfrozen ice bottles (0F). Those usually stay frozen several days and will help for sure. Will also help in case I get stranded in the desert and get thirsty. In fact I always have a couple of these in my home freezer as well, for the same reasons and to have on hand for trips. Best to use HD plastic bottles for that. I use large opaque apple juice bottles usually.

We use frozen water jugs in our cooler, no water mess and a nice supply of emergency water as well. I like the squarish jugs that cranberry juice comes in they are about the right size and the shape packs well. I fill them about 3/4 full and lay them on their side in the freezer, they come out full with out to much of a bulge.

indeed, the odd shape apple juice bottles I have are not good for packing. Have tried transparent plastic squarish ones too but that plastic was not as strong for banging around. And yes I do freeze them horizontally too, much better. And, worth adding, having frozen water bottles along gives one nice cold water to drink as time goes by...
