I was mentioning to Leon Basdekas in conversation one day, that I pull my Viair compressors apart once or twice a year to clean them out, because they get gunked up, and the trash scores the cylinder walls. He asked me how that was possible with the filter, and truth is, I just don’t know. Trash gets in there though. I let this Viair 400P go over a year, because I got lazy. You can see the result. This compressor has never been run without its filter. I will say though, I use my compressors every other weekend, if not more. That’s why I’m such a huge Viair fan boy. I’ve had my 450C for 10 years. Rebuilt it about a year ago. Still truckin’.
Pull those compressors apart and clean them!! Use no oil! I just wipe them down with brake cleaner, and put them back together.

The price of my laziness. I’ve got a couple of pretty healthy cylinder wall scratches.

The inside of the cylinder head. My only guess is that these compressors pull a bit of air back through the line out. The reed valves my not act fast enough when closing, or leak a bit.
