Police Car Style Spotlight

Has anyone mounted an aimable spotlight ( like those mounted on police cruiser A-pillars) on their on 40 ? I always thought having one would be nifty but am not sure if it would work on a 40-style windsheild frame.

Had one through the WS in one of my old trucks. Having the shaft horizontal sucks. I also had a roof mount (vertical shaft) on a truck and it was much better for useability. Like pimp said though "hole in roof". A fiberglass 40 top won't hold up to the weight. Mine is going to be remounted on the rollcage in the vert style with a grommet in the bikini. I hate my hardtop so not an issue.

My '54 Chev pickup had one when I bought it long ago. What a blast. You could nail a gnat's ass (or whatever type of ass you're aiming at) at 50 yards.

Eventually the sheet metal screws holding it in worked loose (so you put bigger screws in until they work loose) and so on. Also, the head would tilt down and bang and rub on the hood. I have a nice littel dent there now.

So, like the others, all I have now is a hole in my windshield frame. Great fun while it lasted though.

The PO had one mounted a little above the middle of the windshield frame on my 40. I hated it and took it off the first day Shoved a little magic bondo in there and now its good as new

in my humble opinion... STAY AWAY from them. We use the same kind of spots on our fire trucks, they work ok for a year or so, then the mounting assembly loosens up, and you never can get them tight again. After that they start shorting out and and never work right again. They are out of service probalby 90% of the time. Of course the city keeps ordering them because "that what we always put on there, besides the cops dont complain about them." Of course the cops get new cars every few years and we keep our 20 or 30, wonder why they don't complain....

i have one of the go lights kinda spendy but nice as you can remove them for those brushy trails and use them in other rigs with the cig lighter

Napa also carries them and I have had nothing but good luck with Napa's. Don't get the cheapest POS you can find, spend some cash on a good light. We have one installed in the roof of all our work trucks and couldn't live without them. We use them every night inthe winter checking cows and every night in the summer checking balers. Never really had any trouble at all, bulbs last quite a while as well. If you install in the roof, set it back from the windshield frame enough or the glare will make your head hurt.

I am in the process of fitting together my Metal Teck cage and will have two of these lights installed by the A pillar and front hoop. Lots easier to point a light at a broke-down rig than getting yourself stuck or backing over something in the dark trying to point your headlights or aux lights for work lights. Sucks to cut a hole in the roof of your classic Cruiser though, but they really are a good thing to have. No need for higher wattage headlights either

We have the 100W units (mag base) installed on six vehicles. We have been using these for almost three years with only one bulb failure. No other problems. I probably turn it on/off a couple of dozen times in an average night. 'Wouldn't work so good on a fbgls FJ-40 roof and would worry going through the woods. They do have bolt-on's.

They gave me a brand new 2002 Blazer (blazee') in Jan 2002. We do hot-bunk these cars (3 shifts) and they ususally make about 170 miles per day, 7 days a week and are rarely shut off. My Blazer has had the engine pulled three times, has had four batteries (overheats them) and will not shift into 4HI. Going into 4LO it clunks and feels like someone rammed you from behind. Piece of crap !!! ;~} I must say I have three excellent drag strips. One is 10,000 feet long by 100' wide.........maybe that's the problem ?

Spotlights

I use 'em at work at the time looking at bad guys. What I will tell you about them is that they use a very weak brass gear train which tends to strip out over time and then spins free. One of the other fine attributes of the Unity spots is that they switch the hot wire which is run up through the handle. Once the wire becomes weak or frayed, they will short out and begin blowing fuses (hopefully everything is well fused). I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole in an off road situation due to the vibration and do to the fact that I'd be responsible for the maintenance not the city mechanics. Just my two cents.
