Pete had one month and $300 dollars to prepare a Toyota FJ40 for the 1973 Baja 1000. He tells the tale of how his preparation helped Toyota garner its first off-road racing victory and that did "absolutely nothing" for his racing career.

79-year-old Pete Springer has been traveling to Baja for over 60 years. He attended the1969 Mexican 1000 as a spectator, raced a home-built single-seater in 1970, and won the Baja 1000 in 1973! In this interview, he shares tales of building the Baja-1000-winning Toyota FJ40. Driving a 1940 Dodge Flatbed to Bahia de Los Angeles in the early 1960s, landing a small plane on the highway near Santa Rosalia and crashing his motorcycle in a pitch-black desert.
