Hammer trick. Just freed a pitman arm on my '89 FJ62 using a $16 Pitman Arm Pull from Autozone and a sledge. I got the puller all snugged up using an impact wrench and first tried hitting the pitman arm puller bolt directly. This is a tricky proposition as I still had steering components in the way and the best I could manage was to put a socket on the puller bolt, then hold a chisel up to that and hit the chisel with a sledge. So, I decided to hit the side of the pitman arm itself right where it is stuck on the bolt. To do this I removed the wheel so I could get a good whack at it and after about 6 strikes with a 2lb sledge it was free.

This reminded me a lot of freeing ball joints on other projects where the key is to just knock it as hard as you can with a hammer. If you've done that before this will seem similar.
