Hey Everyone,

I've been struggling with this decision for a while and I thought I would put it out there to see what you thought. You know how when you truely want something enough sometimes it finds you? Well I drove by this field of FJ55's for year, all the while wanting to get at them for parts. After visiting with the owner several times over a year, he decided to part with one of them. I bought a '76 FJ55 off of him (see my build thread) for parts and have moved it to my back yard. As part of the deal I was to get the papers for the truck. Lately however, he was unable to find them but decided that he would give me two more pigs for free as part of the deal!

Im not sure but I think one is a '74, is engineless but has a good frame, rocker panels, windows, but the rest of the body is pretty shot. The other one is a '73 with papers that has a beautiful grille, fenders are pretty good, F engine, good glass... etc.

Now the dilemma is. Do I pay the expense to have 2 more pigs shipped to my 1/4 acre back yard? I dont have a lot of time to get into stripping them of parts but a part of me wants to save them anyway, and pick parts from them over time. Surely there is a lot they can offer to pig owners out there (I certainly dont need all the parts for my own build ;) The disadvantage is that they will take up space in my small back yard. And I dont need all the parts for myself.

I know there may be ppl out there thinking Im crazy to pass up this opportunity but it seems it may be a lot of work to pull parts, especially when I have no time (read 9 hour days at work with 2 little kids).

Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated!

thanks
Lee

It all comes down to what you are comfortable with.

You could always have a pig party. Have a bunch of local cruiserheads go with you and strip them out. Or even help you move them. I dont know how much it costs you to move them?

Can you strip one and keep those stripped parts stored in the other one? That way you have the benefits of 2 without taking up all the space. You can fit a shizzload of stuff in a pig.

Lee, I could always drop by and give a hand stripping, unless it gets bitterly cold and all snowy by then (yes I'm a wuss for living in Central America these past 5 years). I'd love to say drag them over to my place but the space issue still remains not to mention the parts would need to be gone or scrapped in the next year.

Good point, there IS a lot of space in a landcruiser. I like that idea.

"Do you have any friends with more land that would let you store them on their property?"

Unfortunately Ive exhausted all options there;)

It would be great to have someone help me strip them.

Thanks for all your input. What Im going to do is have them moved over this weekend. I'll tarp them up for now and try to part the worst one first, storing these parts in the back of the second pig. Its true, there really is no time pressure and having only two pigs instead of three in the back yard is tolerable :). I'll try and get some pics up to show everyone what Im dealing with. I'd be more than happy if anyone wants to visit me. THough it is getting cold now, it may be better to have a parts party in the spring.

I feel better knowing these parts arent going to the junker. Pig ownership is definitely an obsession, not only for the finished product but for all the parts they are made up of. Very crazy, I wonder if they have isolated the Pig obsession gene from the human genome (lol)

:hhmm:
1/4 acre is small? I have my 4 Cruisers on my 1/4 acre? ;)

I would say take em, and start listing stuff like mad! Cant let these old rigs go to waste! Offset the money you make for your expenses and keep what you need for your own stash. Aaron

BTW, I know a TON of people that would LOVE to have a small 1/4 acre yard!!! ;p

Clearly I dont know what an acre is. I measured the back yard today, its only 3200 square feet and most of it has mound of dirt left over from my drain tiling...

It doesnt matter. Im going to do this anyway, Its an opportunity I cant pass up. I have to add, my wife is kick ass, because I never thought she would approve it :)

She'll approve it until the stuff starts to rust more and she decides to have a bbq or family over. Do yourself a favor and figure out a way to have it not be a sore thumb before she gets it towed while you're at work
