My names Andy. I live in Oregon and have long loved Land Cruisers. In fact, when I was 18 years old I bought a 72 FJ40 from my high school math teacher for $100 (it was his spare parts rig, so it needed a ton of work.)
I worked on that cruiser for quite some time and eventually sold it when I started worked at a classic Bronco vendor in Albany. I switched over to the 1st Gen Bronco world and have done everything imaginable with my old 68 Bronco, from the Rubicon to Moab. Lots of fun memories and lots of great friends made along the way.
Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, I sold the Bronco (life changes and wanting to start fresh with something different) which was a hard decision, but it was just time to get something that I could drive daily and get out enjoy more frequently.
After looking through Facebook market place and other websites for 80 and 100 series Cruisers, I ended up nailing down I wanted a 100 series for its smoother ride and comfort. My best friends parents while growing up in Boise, Idaho had a 1999 Land Cruiser in this dark gray color that I just loved so much.
I found a 2000 model in Washington for a great price with all the offroad goodies installed and it was that same dark gray color my friends parents cruiser was.
So things I'm currently working on getting fixed:
1. Timing belt, water pump and anything else on the front dress that needs attention. Taking this to a shop to have done this week. Looking at videos online, its more work than I want to tackle at this point.
2. The key only works in the ignition and the rear hatch. The doors are keyed different and I want everything keyed the same. (Also, the key fob only unlocks if you're really close to the vehicle. I saw there is a thread for improving this so I'll look into that more at some point.)
3. The previous owner had lots of light additions and a stereo installed. The interior panels are missing attachment clips, grab handle caps and seat track covers. Lots of misaligned plastic parts that I'm going through and putting back together. The plan for the wiring is to install an Auxbeam panel to clean everything up.
4. Noises and rattles! I found all sorts of random things attached to the underside of the vehicle that were causing noises. There was a chain attached to the underside spare tire assembly that was smacking into the underside of the body when you turned. Also found that the passenger rear shock isn't even remotely tight but the nut is stuck at the top so I've gotta figure that out sooner than later.
5. CV joint is leaking on the driver side + front wheel bearings need replaced. Coming from the world of solid axles, whats everyone's solution to CV joints leaking over time with a slightly lifted vehicle?
2 questions:
1. The rear HVAC button on my dash doesn't work, but if I turn on the overhead panel in the rear the button lights up on the dash and the system functions but the button still does nothing when I push it. Should I be able to turn it on and off from the driver seat or is it only to indicate if the rear is on?
2. 2nd row cupholder - it appears to be pushed in and stuck. Any ideas or suggestions on what to do? Should I just start tearing apart the center console or is there a trick to getting it to open?
