Guys/Girls,

I live in Texas and plan on having my 40 (that's the goal, power steering and other things yet) in CO for two weeks this summer and first week of Oct. good quality time with my two sons in July and a buddy and I in Oct. Does CO require off-road permits?

Will be in the Snowmass area and look forward to enjoying your state a little more off the paved road.
Thank you in advance.

Marc

Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but you shouldn't need one for the FJ40. I take mine out with no problems. Now ATVs, Quads and motorcycles do require a $25 permit and there are rules as far as paved travel. Our club run in July is Red Cone/Webster Pass on the 15th, and the run in October is Hermit Pass on the 14th (snow dependent), so feel free to come along.

It's convoluted. Legally, we're all supposed to have the $25.25 OHV stickers (same price for resident and non-resident)- but they're not really enforcing it. As long as you have state registered license plates, you're good. But, If it's strictly a trailered rig, with no registration, you'll need the OHV stickers.

Thank you both. It is licensed TX 40. Sbc truck working on FI and power steering. Base will be Snowmass. I took my stock 200 up Montezuma and want to do more exploring than that rig will allow. You guys all run Ham's? I bet tough in mtns with CB. Just got back to TX this afternoon. Skiing was great last few days. Looks like good snowpack. I think the trail runs will be a little far for the early 72 and her gears! Marc

Yup, mostly HAM's here. CB's are used by some. As you've probably found out, cell phones are pretty spotty is Colorado. Nice to have a HAM in the back country. You'll have a great time kicking around in the 40 here. If you have time, try to hit Lead King Basin out of Crested Butte. My wife and I's favorite trail in the summer due to the unimaginable wildflowers and scenery. The world famous Crystal Mill is down there at the trailhead of Devils Punchbowl too.

Any favorite NAV that covers CO without going laptop or tablet?

Plan on a few trips over the Created Butte way for lunch and then kicking around. Lots of work to do!

Been researching the trails in the trail book I picked up.

Go on Amazon and search for Charles A Wells "guide to Colorado trails", it's the best book out there IMO. There's a northern trails version too. It has coordinates, waypoints, camping areas... very well laid out.

@houstonfj40

Stay the Trail posted this on February 1st.

Trails Open to Full Size Vehicles

Note the distinction between the words "trail" and "road".

Colorado distinguishes between the two based on their purpose. Most are considered roads. These listed (60) are considered trails.

The listed trails are designated such due to being for recreation, versus transportation.

Also, in case you are not aware, Cottonwood Pass (from Buena Vista to Taylor Reservoir) is scheduled to remain closed all summer 2017. The west side of the pass is being paved. This won't affect you if you travel HWY 50 to Gunnison, then HWY 135 north to C.B.

SAS,

Thank you! There is a lot of planning to do before my recon trip in July for two weeks. I will be in Snowmass for home base in both July and early Oct. most time will be spent in White River I assume. Best way to learn would be for me to get up there for one of your clubs trail runs.

First need to get the power steering and FI done. Plus winch since no lockers. Sitting with 350 and a carb right now. Appreciate the help and hope to run into some of the crew when up there.

When the heck did this OHV sticker come into being? I've been gone since 2010 and I never had to have anything like that back then!

Thank you everyone. Spent two weeks in Snowmass area after pulling her two days from Texas.

Which club/s take care of those trails? I would like to join and help with a few $ to say thank you.

Boys and I amazed, no trash at all on the trails. Get to the top of the ski hillls and it was a much different scene. Always good to see our group treating things right.

Messed around on Pearl Pass, Montezuma, Taylor Pass and some trails lower valley past Carbondale and Glenwood Springs.

Thanks for the help!

Btw, I think I need a higher pressure cap for this trip next year. Tough keeping her cool up there at 12k!

Marc,
According to the Colorado Assn of 4WD Clubs, Pearl Pass is adopted by the Blue Mesa 4-Wheelers. I don't know if this list is current/accurate, but it is what is posted: Adopted Roads - Colorado Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs

Do me a big favor, please--register (free) at trailsoffroad.com and do a trip report on Pearl Pass; it has not been updated since I wrote a trip report on 8/8/2016 (look to the bottom of the trail guide page). You can add your own text, pictures, and even video. Thanks!
