I picked up my part time 4wd kit for my 80 from Point Roberts yesterday. On the 14th a friend (J**p guy) will be helping me install it. I am interested in seeing the fuel consumption difference.

Don't expect to much in the way of fuel savings they just aren't there, weren't for me anyways.

I don't think anything would save you much fuel with 37's. I am only running 285's so I am hoping for some improvement. I drive 80% city so I am thinking that's where I may get some savings with less work for stop and go.

what hubs are you running? mini's?

Purchased a kit from Slee. The hubs are from Brazil, AVM. There may be other options as I see Man-A-Fre also carries a kit. No price though.

so you lock the cdl and install the hubs....what keeps the front driveshaft from being powered...not to mention all the birfs etc? I think the transfer case needs to be disconnected from fulltime to really get mpg savings.

I'm not too mechanical.

I repeat.

One day I will visit family in Smithers. I will then meet the famous Brown Bear and he will see I love driving. But I am far better at putting wood items together than metal ones.

doesn't eh cdl switch do the same as the spool?

I have been told that with out the CDL switch you can not use 4 high with locking hubs. 4 low will work with out the CDL. Don't how that works mechanically.

If my work shift allow this year I will try to get to Cruiser days. Famous....I dunno.... net addict I think so.. :)

The cdl on my truck only engages when I push in the button, regardless of hi 4 or low 4. But mine is a 91. I think the later ones got a viscous coupler instead of just a differential in the middle.... I bet Semlin knows for sure the needs.

There is a thing called a CDL mod in the 80 section.... maybe that is all you need to do. A spool makes you a 50/50 4wd when your in 4wd all the time. I like the option of an open centre diff when driving on slippery mountain highways. It balances torque very nicely.
