I understand with the Mark's part-time kit you gain the lighter steering wheel feel and save wear up front, but lose the all-wheel drive feature, which is a benefit driving on intermittent icy patches and bare pavement during the winter.

I like it. I really like not thinking about front axle wear too. Sorry the Fast and Furious Tsawwassen Drift video did not turn out...

I just had to do a front end rebuild and I contemplated changing to part time, but I ended up deciding against it for the reason above. I'll pay extra for the added safety in freezing and heavy rain type conditions.

Did ATEB do the work for you sailor? Phillip had mentioned they had just done a part time conversion for someone when I dropped my truck off in early August.

Yes- excellent service- they put in the deep low range gear as well. T-case was like new too. I love 2WD on highway- should have done this yrs ago. No AWD in my 60 was not a problem...

OK So I went and did the Whipsaw with the Roverlanders last weekend- Great bunch. Was really torn up and muddy.

The Part time kit made little difference on the trail as I simply locked in the hubs at the start and left them in. The extra deep low range gear, however was really a nice improvement. It is no longer necessary to stand on the brakes down hill as before, so the engine braking is much better. I still wish it was a little better but this is pretty good, and I am satisfied with the results. There is a slightly different whine in low range now which is novel. Since I am no closer to the NV 4500 swap- this was a good compromise.

What is the new low ratio?

Frankly I have no idea. I got it from Steve at EBI- I think it is 25% lower. The truck was unstoppable on this trip, it amazes me how I hardly ever have to use the elockers. I drive pretty gently but am constantly amazed with how well the 81 does, it certainly does compensate for a certain lack of skill on the part of the operator...

good call on the part time. I think I will be doing it sooner than later.

make no mistake man. the 80 series is an awesome machine even in stock form. you have drive other things to really realize what you got.

I have the same low gear from Steve and I as well have no idea as to ratio. I used it for the first time at Cruisin' The Woods. I found it made a huge difference, especially on he downhill.
