Picked up a first gen (07) SR5 that needs some work, to include the steering rack. When I went to pull the rack I realized that the part of the steering column that the rack slides into was mangled at some point earlier. Struggling to see exactly what part I need on the diagrams online. It's the bottom most part of the column that includes the toothed hole the spindle off the rack goes into, and you tighten down with a bolt. Looking at the intermediate shaft, but different websites are showing it differently and I'm not sure if it's everything I need. TIA

Between steering rack and steering column there's an intermediate shaft, yes. How was it mangled? Failed attempts of removing a frozen bolt?

In the past when I’ve been stuck trying to identify a part (or get the part number), I’ve gone to the dealership and talked to the parts dept guys. They will usually show their monitors while you’re talking with them and that typically helps locate the right part. And if it’s the wrong one, it’s usually the same guy taking the return that helped you pick it out, so they won’t charge you the restocking fee.

I say mangled, the bolt that I pulled out was stripped worse than anything I've seen on a car thus far. After sourcing a replacement bolt and trying to send it through it still wouldn't seat correctly, so I anticipate that there was significant cross threading at some point in the past that killed both the bolt and the fastener. Having never tapped threads before I'm reticent to try on something as mission critical as a steering component, but I'm sure someone could make it work. Figure it would just be advantageous to replace the part since the vehicle has almost 300k on the clock.

Can't imagine I can tap it in place on my Tundra, no place for that.

Mine died at like 40ish K. Aftermarket skid plate is narrower than the stock dust shield, the U-joint is exposed to elements. I cross-threaded one of the bolts a bit, too. The removal will be nasty next time :)
