I figured I'd approach my issue from another angle. Relying on all of your expertise here (i already have looked at the manual and google and here). On a 1997 Lx450 what circumstances need to be met for the vehicle to be locked in Park (shifter locked..not the doors) by the vehicle?
EDIT: I did find a thread saying it might be the brake switch or a blown fuse because the vehicle will stay locked in park unless it can detect the brake lights are coming on (something not in the manual apparently). So I'll track that down, but it doesn't explain the fix i found..which is popping the hood latch from inside the cab.
