I was talking to one of the guys around close who works on cruisers and he said a pan hard rod is a necessity on a SOA. I never heard it was a half to, and never read about it on here. Any of yall have them or just run it like it reads in the tech links?
 
he probably meant a anti wrap bar in the rear. People confuse their bars sometimes ;)

A panhard bar will reduce bump steer in the front. BUt it is hardly necessary on a 40...
 
Yep thats what i thought too, but i looked at the pics on his website and it showed one on one of the rigs he was working on. He said that was to keep vibration down and that it was dangerous to run without one. Didnt exactly sound right to me, but then again I wouldnt hire him to do anything either so, who knows. Thanks for the input though. Im one of those people who have read and read and talked to people and still cant make up my mind anyway. There is a reason almost all modern leaf sprung vehicles do have PH bars. They do help in steering. And reduce articulation, kill bushings faster, etc.

They have their place. But not on any of my leaf sprung cruisers..
 
He's smoking something. It is not needed and it is contra-productive for a rig that is supposed to articulate. I have NEVER seen one on an SOA Cruiser, and I have never put on in any of the SOAs I have done. And EVERY single one I have done drives better than it did before the SOA.

I think he's confused a Panhard bar with a Sway bar. A panhard bar is one way to laterally locate a solid axle in a coil sprung suspension.
If you put one in a leaf sprung suspension it would limit articulation and you'll likely bind and break it, or something else. Leaf springs do the job of locating the axle and would probably conflict with a panhard rod doing the same.

A swaybar on the other hand would add to control and stability on an SOA, but would also limit articulation. So why do that when articulation is one of the benefits of and SOA?

To clarify , a panhard bar like on early broncos and the newer coil sprung heeps are to locate axle left to right . A soa cruiser on leaf springs don't need em cause the leaf springs do that job. A linked suspension needs to be triangulated or if links are straight or you want a 3 link then you need panhard rod.

As I said, most modern solid axle rigs wth leaves have one. It is to reduce bump steer and to make steering more responsive. My 2000 F350 Crew cab has one.
 
hey, that's my cruiser. so, i guess i'll remove the panhard rod. this guy did alot of work to my cruiser. some good, and some bad. anyway, he told me it was to help with bodyroll while turning.

Panhard bars do help with steering on a solid axle with leafs, mostly at slow speeds.

The bracket on the axle for the panhard on my F350 ripped in two. I wired the panhard out of the way until I could get it into a local fabrication shop to weld the bracket back together. (The only way ford would sell a new bracket for the axle was with a new axle housing attached to it.)

When stopped if I turned the steering wheel I could actually feel the front of the truck move before the tires would turn.

I think on my truck this action is exaggerated over a SWB like my FJ40 as my trucks wheel base if 172.5 inches.

As for driving with out the panhard bar, on the road I never even noticed it wasn't there.
