Hey. Bought a 72 fj40 last year. Been tinkering with all the mechanical stuff, now I'm ready for body work and paint job. I did the major welding, but it still has some rust and dents throughout. Y'all have any good suggestions of people to use who do a good job for a not outrageous price? Also, to get an original color, can I still get paint from the toyota dealers? Thinking about dune beige.

Dune beige is the best!!!

Where did you buy the 72? No suggestions on shops as I haven't done that yet, some other CLC guys may chime in on that but most of the guys do their own stuff.

for color codes do a search for "paint codes" if that doesn't narrow your results go to the 40 section and then search for paint codes. Also CCOT has a good list here Cruiser Color Codes Most local paint stores can create the color for you with the code and can get it in 5 gallon cans for a sprayer or if you are cheap, like me, they can put it in aerosol cans for you.

Dune biege can mean about 50 different shades....here are colors for your year http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/coolfj40_2170_394406003

also if you float around this site and SEE the color you want just ask the guy or gal that owns it...9 out of 10 times they know the code......good luck

Cotton Land Cruisers meets the first Tuesday of every month at the Cherokee bar and grill on I55 north frontage road if you want to kick tires and meet the club.....great group and very family oriented.

Do it yourself. Are you looking for a good paint job? Rattle can it dune beige. I've seen several that looked good that way. Gonna cost you an arm and a leg to get it painted at a body shop around here.

Andy and I have both done some rattle can stuff and Andy is actually doing a good beige color on his....grille looks awesome......he will chime in I hope...Andy, color and place you found it?

I was freaked out to rattle can but a good box fan in a garage with lots of plastic worked. just go for it....worst case scenario it looks bad or runs and you sand it and go again!

PLEASE get a good respirator and work in a well ventilated area.........fumes are cool but so are working brain cells

Why limit yourself to one color. Also, cages are paint optional!

2nd that. Go buy a few of those pistol grip sprayer attachments and go to town.
A good paint job is mostly really good prep work and really good color sanding afterward with a very small amount of technique. You could also spend a few bucks more and buy/rent a compressor and a HVLP gun. You may come out ahead with your savings on wasted paint. Did you ever play basketball? If so you may remember those lateral movement drills you used to do in practice. Painting is a lot like that. You really don't want to whip your arms around much, instead fix your arms and spray a continuous pattern as you slide laterally.

You litarally can paint a car with single stage paint about 10 times for what a shop will charge.

Have fun

Mine was $1500 13 years ago and that was a smokin' deal. BTW Shush, I don't see anything wrong with your lift. Looks like it's sitting perfect. Why do you think it's worn out?

well it still looks FINE.....lift is great.....height of garage for cruiser entry with top on.....is not.......

eventually i will redo the suspension and lower it 2 inches and go with 33s for a DD, but that may be a while....for now im weekend driving it and the suspension is great.....gotta clean the spring packs, put new bushings and shackles on and test shocks...but I LOVE the way it sits.

I am using rust oleum camo series ultra flat khaki. This truck was painted with the same rattle can paint and then they sprayed a light top coat of a textured color. Rattle can works for me because it is easy to do different parts at different times and easy to touch up.... And cheap. Do some looking in the paint tech pages on mud. There are many options.

Roller Method - Car Painting

I've seen a few cars painted via this method and they looked really good. It may be a little tougher to use this method on a 40 as they have so many seems. The hood vents and the rear doors would also pose a problem but could be worked around.

For about $50 I think it may be worth a try.
