So, I am a newbie to posting but I have been studying this site for a couple of years. This site has saved me a lot of money and frustration. Anyway, just fixed my 401 with new modulator and vsv from cdan. I just bought the parts and replaced due to my limited mechanical ability. Then yep, 402. We have emissions in my tn county so I have to fix this. Just like several people have stated, I checked the port on the intake(from the egr) and it was clogged. So maybe I replaced good parts, but I no longer have that check engine light staring at me. I am posting this just to say thank you to all who contribute.

luigi,
I have to agree with you. Finding MUD has been pure gold in terms of convincing me to acquire an 80 as the best value in an 4x4 to suit my needs. It's given me confidence that I economically operate and repair the 80, a vehicle I couldn't afford new, but which I frankly lusted after for many years. I'm glad you found it, too, and happy to join you and everyone else here who makes this site such a great community.

I cleared check engine light by replacing tubing and the VSV under the intake manifold (just left the OEM one in place, piped in and zip tied a new one in without removing manifold).

I moved to California so also had to pass smog. I had the CAT ready light stuck on forever. Nothing would clear it. Drove at 3,000 RPM, ran cleaner through intake, and drove normal for over 400 miles… I was about to pull the CAT and try to clean them… Ended up replacing the O2 sensors before and after CAT and went for a drive on the highway in 2nd gear (about 45mph, 3,000 RPM). On my way home accepting defeat and trying to talk myself into pulling the CAT I looked down and noticed the light was ready. I immediately drove to SMOG. No one in line, they did sniffer and OB2 test and I passed! Feels good to not have that CEL and to get legal registration and plates!

Just thought I’d share the second part of my journey after reading this post and clearing codes only to find out the CAT ready light was it’s own adventure.
