I was driving down the highway (20 mins into my drive) and all of the sudden the CEL appears. Absolutely NO misfire though - engine was still smooth as silk.

The last time a coil pack went out it gave me the P0306 code - I think this is actually a misfire code.

At any rate, if an ignition coil goes out will it always read P030x or have any of you simply had the P13xx code? I did a google search, and also looked on here, but couldn't find any definitive answers. Apparently P1300 means Ignitor Circuit malfunction.

Does anyone know what the ignitor circuit is? Or does this simply refer to the ignition system for that said cylinder as a whole?

You'd think the truck would start running rough if there was an issue.

Anyway, I cleared the code with my scanner and I'm waiting for it to return.

Thoughts anyone?

The P13xx code can be a precursor to the P030X. In my case I saw P0300 [random cylinder misfire] and P1304 together.

Its the ignition circuit for that cylinder.

Wait long enough and it probably will.

Just had this exact scenario on my 1999/247K miles. Previous coil failures had thrown P030x, but this one threw P1304 and P0300. It ran smoothly but for one short instance of rough running that was unmistakably a coil pack failing. Subsequent runs were smooth, but the CEL returned with the same code pair. Replaced the coil pack and all good.

Kool, thanks for the heads up. I want to go with factory, or Denso or whoever makes them for Toyota. What's the best source for these for pricing?

Not sure which coast Abbotsford is on, or not, but Sam at Lowe Toyota has great prices on OEM parts and terrific service in my experience.

This just happened on my '99 w/ 165k miles today. Made a turn and it started running rough with the check engine light blinking. Checked the codes, P0301. So, just replace the coil pack on cylinder 1?

Yep. That's the most likely culprit, though technically it could also be the plug, as the code is for a misfire, not specifically for a coil pack failure...

That's the typical code for a failed coil pack. As re_guderian says it could also be a plug, or a cable, or a connection, but every one of these I've seen has been a coil pack. I'm on my second replacement on some cylinders.

As others have said it's likely your coilpack, but I was one of those rarer scenarios where I replaced my coilpack and it didn't fix my misfire. Turned out to be the plug.

Does a failed coil pack always throw a code?

If it has failed it will run rough. Someone else can chime in whether it will always throw a code. You'll know if one is bad though.

Ahhhh hah!! Just got the PO306 code today. For some time now my '98 was doing an intermittent stutter, a cough now and then, and some rough starts in the cold mornings. Today though, I got a call from the wife. "The truck is shaking hard when I step on the gas!" I show up and sure enough... it was coughing and bucking like an unbroke horse. No CEL still though... They were able to drive it home but the truck didn't like it much. By the time they got home the CEL was finally lit. I pulled the code (PO306), ran down to the local parts store and picked up a new coil pack, popped it into the #6 hole and fired 'er up. Smooth as silk again. I used my phone to clear the code and we are back to normal again.

What app/hardware do you use to clear the codes with your phone?q

So just a quick update to the original post - the CEL has come back a number of times (while I had my coil pack on order) however no other probs. Yesterday afternoon my wife said the truck started stumbling right while pulling out of the driveway (ie - 1 cyl down) at the same time the CEL came on. She immediately turned around back into the driveway and shut it off. I then restarted, and it ran fine (except this time the CEL didn't light up) - literally 30 seconds after she shut it off. Weird...

Anyway, this morning the part arrived and I picked it up and installed in Cylinder 1. The truck ran smooth before/after installation and CEL was NOT on - HOWEVER I rescanned using my scanner directly after install and sure enough the P1300 code was still there (I'm aware of having to reset the CEL after installation of the coil pack) - I"m just pointing out the fact that there was an error code without setting off the CEL which I wasn't thinking could happen. At any rate, code is cleared, truck ran smooth on a 60 mile trip today. YAY!!
