When I used acetelyne, I would go through three tanks of oxygen for every tank of acetelyne. Now that I use propane, I go through over a 100 tanks of oxygen before I need to do a refill on a propane tank. Propane is a BIG, BIG $$$ saver.
Great if you do mostly cutting. Can't braze well with propane though.

Not an expert on this at all but at work, I messed around with a Petrogen torch which uses ordinary gasoline and oxygen. We were able to cut through many layers of thick steel.

New torch required or just a propane regulator?

Regulator is the same. Cheap modification. Just need to buy a new tip for the cutting torch head is all. The oxygen tip has a bunch of tiny thin slits instead of round holes the accetelyne tip has.

I have an O/P setup and selected it just for the convenience of having propane around the house. I have enough tanks around, being able to keep one spare for both the grill and the O/P helps. Plus the O/P is supposed to be much cleaner so you don't get that black crap everywhere. Another benefit is that if I need propane I can get it anywhere almost any time of day.
