Question for some of you that like to do camping/overlanding trips. While I enjoy going on wheeling trips, I have been inspired to try taking a more overland style trip. Does anyone have any suggestions or info on a good beginner trip. Not more than a days travel to get off pavement.

I realize anywhere on the east coast is going to involve some on road travel, but would like to keep it to a minimum. Thinking 2 or 3 days on the actual "expedition".

Thanks all.

Our hurricane creek trip and Portsmouth island one come to mind

I give a strong second to Portsmouth Island.

It's a good destination and requires planning to pull off successfully. It's definitely a journey to get there, to be enjoyed along the way. The destination is the payoff... you can make stay for as long as you want - so it's good for a couple of days or a week. You can also do this with Cape Lookout, and it's big enough that you can overland along various points out there.

Don't go in the summer though -- bugs abound. Horseflies and mosquitos!

We went in late october, and it was wonderful.

Looked at some past threads on those two trips. They look like fun. I've got twin boys who are 7 now, would like to start doing some trips with them. Need to get more/better camping gear...

I've had both my little girls on trips like this since they were 3 months. You're in good hands in this group for advice for gear, travelling with kids, and keeping them occupied when we arrive at the destination!
