Hi guys
I have a 1999 LandCruiser 100 4.2L 1HDT turbo diesel
I live in the highlands of Panama. Been watching this forum since I bought the rig a couple years ago, but never posted. I've got a question regarding the automatic transmission these have. I had it rebuilt recently since it was overheating. Actually I've had it rebuilt twice but the first time the mechanic did me dirty- it's a long story. Anyhow the torque converter has been rebuilt, the transmission has been rebuilt, and it still wants to overheat when I'm climbing steep mountain roads, which I do a lot of. And I have a transmission oil cooler (model without fan) installed. So it's super frustrating for me. Just had my new mechanic (he knows his stuff) drop the tranny again. The oil was scorched but all the parts are still great. My question is, what could be causing this? Our last thing to check would be the valve body mechatronics. Is it possible this would be the cause of the vehicle not downshifting at the appropriate times? I do tend to need to turn my O/D OFF when I'm in the mountains so that it downshifts sooner.
Which brings me to my next question. IF this is the cause of the overheating, am I better off putting on a new cooler (been looking at the hayden model that has a fan) as well as a tranny temp gauge? This would be much cheaper than a new valve body. My thought is if I see if overheating then I can downshift into gear 1-2 depending what I need.
Has anyone experienced issues with the valve body and how have you gone about fixing it?
