Overheating Question...

My '98 100 is running real hot at idle and slow, stop and go traffic speeds, getting into the red. As soon as I get going it drops immediately. No codes or check eng light...

What do y'all think it is? I did a cursory search and did not see this specific issue addressed...

Any recommendations? Thermostat? Radiator?

DX was fan clutch

Could be more than this - but how's the fan clutch? Low air flow w/o force air at speed is sometimes a driver for overtemp at idle. Does it look like it's rotating slowly, if at all, at idle - amost [Not that I'd ever suggest you try this] like you could stop it by hand?
 
Mine was running warm today, I took it as a sign that it was HOT AS HELL outside today.

I'd start with a good flush and refill with Toyota coolant and a new Toyota radiator cap. The cap plays a roll in the pressure regulation on the system.

If that doesn't fix it I'd look at the fan clutch, and then the radiator.

That would all be after I searched the hunderd forum for regular issues.

Notice Greg said TOYOTA coolant, the red stuff. My 80 was having issues and I finally flushed a second time and used the red stuff and it fixed the hot issues for me. I don't know how my rig knew I was using the regular green coolant but it did.
 
needed fan clutch

Fan Clutch was bad ...285 bucks, a fan clutch and 1/2 gallon of red she is as good as new...courtesy of graves and stoddard. I have no complaints.

Never give up so easy!!! You learn so much more by systematically replacing everything.
 
I know trial and error are a great way to learn, but in this instance i would have flushed and chaged the radiator coolant, changed the thermostat, bought a new genuine Toyota radiator cap, :o all before getting to the fan clutch...perhaps all would have been good maintenace, but I still would not have had my problem solved...

Next time I will replace parts indiscriminantly:D

Again, thanks for the responses and being a great resource, but for this forum I would not have known about graves and stoddard...
 
Mat, I'd recomend a new cap if it wasn't part of G&S's invoice. It's cheap, and plays a part in pressure regulation, which affects fan clutch life.

I agree with Tony, throwing money and time at the truck a great way to learn.. just ask Barry, boy has he learned a lot! :D
