Hi all, I have a problem with my overdrive. When turned off the transmission works perfect and smooth for a 442F. However when turned on the transmission becomes erratic. It will shift into overdrive but when slowing down to below 20km/h the driveshaft accelerates and decelerates causing backlash clunking that is excessive. Also and this is the biggest problem, within 10 minutes of driving when pulling to a stop the transmission stays in the overdrive gear even when reverse is selected. The car cannot take off and the only way to get mobile again is to turn the motor off. Then the transmission functions normally until the next stop. I have removed the battery to reset the computer and have replaced the ATF, transfer case oil, diff oils, greased drive shafts, engine oils, brake fluid etc...
It appears to have overdrive jammed on and reverse when selected. I believe that when the motor is turned off the auto pump shuts down allowing the overdrive to drop out. This is only my theory. When it is in this condition the car surges forward momentarily when the gear lever is moved past Neutral. There are no tranny warning lights or codes flashing so it believes itself to be working correctly. It started over a week ago and we are still driving it just without overdrive selected. The car hasn't seen rain for sometime. I live some 1000km's from the nearest transmission workshop and do my own work. However a transmission rebuild would be very challenging although I have read some great threads here on how to do it. The gearbox has done 140000km's with mainly high speed cruising and little stop start work. It hasn't been used for towing. As said previously the tranny works perfectly like new if the overdrive is not selected.
Any help would be appreciated.
