I'm lookin fer advice an opinions as to the rear axle of our fj40. On the 26th of Jan I sheard the pinion within 30 mins of unloadin at Tuttle. That diff hadn't been in there 2 n 1/2 years.
Thats the 3rd one in 25 years. I'm 249lbs. Had the wife 120lbs and anuthr gal 130lbs an the dog 20lbs along.
Some of ya know the rig an driver some don't. Short bio 73 fj40 built 2f, sm420 4.11s. 35 GY Mtr's cut tread, beadlocks. 8psi frunt 6psi rear, Hydro assist steerin, shackel reverse. Weighs 4400 lbs with spare tire.
I'm not the most aggessive driver. :) But I like to do diffacult and extreme wheelin.
I not oposed ta spendin money ta fix a problem. But would a new fine spline r&p an chromo axels be money well spent or should I be lookin at a custom 9" , 14 bolt, 303, unimog or some other axle?
Please an thank you, Don P.

have you sheared the pinion every time? is it welded locked ever had problems with stock axle shafts. I would guess a 9" would be your next step unless you think you would go bigger tires in the future.

assuming you have always used stock parts? what about an aftermarket set of gears if all your problems have been related to those. stock gears are designed for hundreds of thousands of miles. where your aftermarket are a little more forgiving on impact and slow power transfer but will wear with tens of thousands of miles potentially. kind of like the continued argument about the chromo shafts for every day driving.

just my thoughts but really 3rd in 25 years doesn't sound like a big problem to me. i know it ruins the day but only every 8 years?

Do you have an anti-wrap bar on the rear axle? I haven't broken a pinion since I installed one on my 40. I am sprung over though.

I've always been of the opinion that beefing up one component makes something else the weakest link. If you aren't careful, the weakest link could be very expensive to replace. Not that I want to replace pinions all the time, but having those go out on you seems a little odd. I ran nearly the same setup as you for a decade without breaking a pinion. Are your springs wrapping and putting the driveshaft yoke into a bind? Is your driveshaft too long and bottoming out? Just brainstorming...

Wassup don.. Howdy long time no see..
Here's my $.02.. I know the truck, i know the driver.. Personally, I'm surprised you havent' busted a Tcase yet.. or at least the nose cone on a tcase.
I'd toss in a set of fine spline Fj62 diffs and call it done. i broke ONE rear axle on 38"s and that was cause I wedged it between 2 rocks the size of vw bugs.. And i'm pretty sure you know what those things are! :)
NO need to spend a TON of $ upgrading.. Or keep it simple.. Use those 4.11 course spline diffs and use that as your shear point. they're CHEAP..

How's retired life? at least I think your retired now correct? When we gonna see you and golden out again?
Later.. Erik..

Its sprung under. 2.5 BDS bottom leaf removed. 2" longer shakels. (This is sometimes changed to 1" longer due to load) Gas magnum shocks. Stock rear driveshaft for 75 & up fj40. So its a little short but has never fallen apart. No bind at full droop. Bump stops lowerd 1".
I did hav ta do ALot of grindin to the front driveshaft yoke to eliminate bind. The front has ALOT more travel now.
Not gonna up tire size. Not on this rig. More than 35s and I feel your cheatin. You loose part of the challange.
Now after our last time up Pritchertt canyon I did say " I dont want ta go back without a rig on 42s" But in my mind thats a 05 gm 6.0 ext cab SAS.
I did break the TC, twice. 1st was Goldens leg bumpt into lever shiftin it from 4 lo to 4 hi on a steeep downhill. 2nd was due to 3 of the 4 bolts came aloose on the front driveshaft and it hit that big hump on the sm420. BOOM clunkaclunka. So the tc shift lever leans as far to the left as possible and I always put red locktite on the bolts. Also look at the funnay noise. Dont write it off to a bent skiddy.
Perhaps next years plan would be 4 link the rear. Ive watched video of the rig. The tires seem to build traction then slip. Which I feel has gotten better since cuttin out all the smaller tread blocks. And the springs seem to just bounce, move up and down. Perhaps Ill borrow a friends gopro at Disney an git a real good look at my rear! :-0
