Only runs with choke pulled out slightly

Stock 2f with freshly rebuilt carb and head. Put it all back together after a blown head gasket, and now it will only run with choke pulled out. Starts good with it pulled out fully and runs fine as long as its pulled out just a little. But as soon as you disengage the choke completely it shuts down on a dime.

I've heard vacuum leaks, but I can't find anything obvious.

Thoughts?

my 72 f only idles with the choke slightly out, all the way in and it sputters and dies. i too am perplexed

Probably a vacuum leak. Try spraying carb cleaner around the intake manifold. If you get a raise in the RPM's you've identified the leak. Had a similar issue due to the PO having installed the intake manifold gasket backwards. Did you check the manifolds for flat when you reinstalled them? Others have suggested using 2 manifold gaskets - which is what I did. So far so good.

I had the same issue with my 40 when I bought it.

I also took the two gasket route, and it has been working for me so far.

I agree with the vacuum leak theory. Be lookin for that.

I would also check the carb solenoid. It may not be getting 12v.

Vac leak I bet. Put a vac gauge on it. 17+ is great. If low see to issues in valves, carb base, intake etc.... Sounds like you looked for vac leaks. Try advancing you timing a bunch advanced. Advance until your vac drops off then see how it runs off idle. If it rattles a lot re adj your valves, if it rattles a little then get better gas.
