Before pic's and a during pic:

There was more rust than the pictures show... meaning, more rust than I realized when I bought it. But, it did run and drive.

I found the vortec on craigslist. It was from a wrecked Tahoe. Supposedly low mileage, but I'll never really know. Good news is it runs great with strong oil pressure - so somewhat of a gamble that paid off. Came with everything - harness, computer, MAF, etc.

Thanks for the compliments.

WOW.

That rig has come a long way since I last saw it.

Wish I could say the same. :D I rocked your old rollbar for a summer, but I haven't put the four speed in yet.

Heck of a job. Beautiful rig.

Did you end up sticking toyota for the tranny? I seem to recall you had the rare tranny, but did you end up going chevy for ease of install?

Hey! How've you been?

Glad you at least put the roll bar to good use. I've got more leftover stuff around if you're making a trip through again...

I ended up selling the H41 and picked up a NV4500. The neat thing about that with the Vortec is that it's just the right length to keep the drivelines unchanged - and the shifter comes up through the floor in a reasonable place. Worked out really clean.

Great job.. Very clean looking...

is that a fj40 xfer case or a fj60 xfer case? i take it you also used the advanced adpator for the transmission to xfer case? could you post a pic from the inside of where the shifter comes through?

Nice.

I should be headed through around November; I'll send you a mail.

For that matter, you should send me a list/prices. I'll be heading down to surf and turf (knock on wood); it would be a good place to disperse your extras through mudship. There will be people coming in from all over.

Sent a PM but thought I would post here as well in case someone else knows the answer.

I really like those cross members you have that sit underneath by the tranny and I assume act as skid plates or protectors. Did you make those yourself or is that somethink you can buy?

Thanks!

Great work on the 40!

Looks great, shows a lot of hard work.

Josh - I'll put together a list and PM you.

Charger383bb - I used the 40 style TC, but an Orion. Still a one piece case. And yes, my bill with Advance Adapters was probably the single biggest expenditure on the whole build! It all went together smoothly, though.

Here are a few more pic's of tranny:

Cruisermoose -I replied to your PM, but the inspiration came from some builds I saw on Pirate. I don't know of anyone that mass produces them. So far I haven't found any of my pictures that show more detail. If I do, I'll post them up.

Nice job, was wondering where you sourced your twin stick boot.

Very clean conversion!
What did you do for the VSS?
Who did the reprogramming of the computer for you?

Cheers!

I was lucky enough to find a Downey VSS adapter that bolts on the back of the t/c. Works pretty slick. If you can't find one of those, I'd look at Jagsthatrun. If you're handy, you might also be able to take a 40 tooth relucter ring and put in place of the spacer at the rear of the t/c input like the Downey kit does, then modify a housing to hold a gm sender. You might want a friend with a lathe... but it looked do-able.

Brenden from lt1swap.com did the programming. Actually, I found a lot of useful information on his website. The programing seems good. Hasn't thrown any codes other than related to me leaving the MAF sensor unplugged once... oops.

Ditto on where the twin boot stick came from.

Have had my 40 in pieces for 7 years now. Stories like this are an inspiration for me.

The twin stick boot came with the kit from Advance Adapters - so not much help there, unless they sell them separately. It is a slick little boot, though!

Hang in there! I thought mine was going to take that long, but once I started going back together with it, progress really started to pick up. I really had to fight the urge to half-ass stuff just to get it together. Had to tell myself to take the time to do it right - otherwise I'd get it together and not be happy.

It will be worth it - no matter how long!
