Question about the change from RadFlo to OME:

The radflo's you had were remote reservoirs and the OME are simple shocks, correct? I'm really wondering why the Radflos were so bad when they are a more expensive shock if I'm not mistaken.

Also, are the new OMEs 2" or 2.5" diameter?

Ok, let me clarify, and this is for MY rig only, that the front Radlo's were fine for me. When I put in the rear medium springs, I had to jack the front coilovers up as high as they would go, but nothing was wrong with them at all.

The rear were another story. Like Chimyz, my rear shocks 'hit' or 'topped out' when hit large or even medium dips. As the body would shoot upwards in the rear, you would hear a 'knock'. Not good. Plus the ride was really rough.

I switched the front out for OME at the same time as the back because I wanted everything to be uniform. I wanted everything to be MADE to work together.

Being more expensive does not mean anything. I would go by reviews and people's experience then by any price point.

I don't know the diameter of the shocks. You might want to check ARB's site for that info.

Being a Freshman again

Remember leaving the safety of 8th for highschool? Well, with my next question, I'm about to relive it.

What the heck is OME?

How's that for a newbee question.:bang:

OME = Old Man Emu...suspension from Australia.

Thanks Chimyz. That's what kept coming up on my searches but I just was not sure.

Anytime...that's why this forum is here...I had issues with OME too, when I first heard about it years ago. I kept thinking people meant OEM, Original Equipment Manufacturers. I thought it was weird that people were telling me to put original parts on when I wanted an upgrade on my 4runner? It was very confusing, and I needed to call a trusted buddy to clarify. This was before my days on mud.

OME stuff is awesome and bombproof. that is why I went with it. They make suspension for all types of rigs, but what I love is that it is replacement for what you already have (coils, leaf springs, shocks, struts) and only mild lifts...I don't need to have 38" wheels on my daily driver, so the lift suits real well.

BTW, can one of you gents PM me prices on the OME stuff? I'm budgeting :D

I'd like to know shocks, springs, spacer packs, shock protection plates, TC upper arms, Icon lower arms, etc. Any prices you have would be mucho appreciated as ARB/OME does not provide this info on their website and they have been slow to respond. Thanks!

My pricing is all Canadian dollars, so doesn't mean much, but the OME Front & Rear Springs, Front Struts and rear Shocks with front spacers only was aroung $1500. The TC UCAs I think were $500. So about $2000 before install for the whole thing.

Didn't know Icon did a lower arm (unless you are talking about the rear trailing arm). DTT has those and I don't. He should be able to give you pricing.

Current exchange from U.S. to Canadian is like $0.20. I think for $1800 U.S. you should get everything.

I never even thought about the shock protection plates...I may look into those.

OME?

Thanks for the education and as usually happens with enlightenment, I have a follow-up. I don't do any extreme off-roading but do like to go camping. I pull a small, enclosed aluminum trailer upon which my RTT is mounted. Packed and hooked up, my rear sags a bit, enought to piss off oncoming traffic whom think I have my high beams on.

With this in mind, should I use OME medium duty, add air bags to help with leveling, or some other modification?

Thanks again!

I think what you have in mind is perfect. It will give you great day to day driving characteristics, and with the airbags + towing, the above setup will be great for all around.

Chymiz, thanks again for you help. I re-read my post and realized it was not that clear. In my mind I had three options:
  1. Stock shocks with air bags
  2. OME medium duty
  3. OME medium duty with air bags
I like the way she rides stock but don't like how she sags when loaded. That said, how much stiffer would medium duty make her? Would medium duty plus air bags be overkill?

I cannot really see airbags being needed. With the .75 inch lift in back we are all still getting, in reality, about 2 inches.

Dtt, how much stiffer is the ride with OME mediums? If I went with them, would I need them up front as well in order to counter act the rear lift?

The ride is not any stiffer to me at all. You would not HAVE to get the ones up front but if you don't get the ones up front, you will have a very large stink bug (ass in the air) look.
