Question on what you guys think. I bought my FJ slightly used a couple of years ago. The dealer had installed a Revtek 3" and had 285 75 16 mounted when I found it. I recently installed Warn front and rear bumpers and will be soon slapping on a winch. Should I consider moving to a heavier spring set up like the OME heavies? I just put the bumpers on, and certainly haven't put them to use yet offroad...thoughts?

Hmmm...I guess it all depends on the setup you have planned for your rig. In other words, how you will have the weight distributed when you are all done and ready to go off road with it. If both your bumpers are solid steel, the question would be how much cargo weight are you going to carry in the back of the vehicle?
If you carry 500 lb or more on the back there should be no undue stress on the front end. I detach my winch when I'm not using it, so this isn't an issue for me. However, most people will install a winch and leave it on the vehicle all the time. If your winch is under 75 lb., your suspension should be adequate. Your springs should be able to take 200 lb of extra weight without problems. If your suspension lowers more than 3/8 of an inch when you put the bumper and winch on, I would go with the heavier suspension. :hmm:

Revtek is the spacer lift, correct?

replace it....the Revtek lift reduces your suspension travel since it wedges between the spring and the top of the front strut, limiting your down travel...and by using stock springs, you don't gain any weight carrying....

I would replace the RT lift. As Woody stated it merely adds a spacer to the existing suspension limiting travel. The OME setup you mention replace the springs and the shocks as a matched set. I have metal tube bumpers front and rear on my rig. I also have a winch on a multi mount setup so I do not carry the weight of the winch up front all the time. I originally had OME mediums front and rear. I carry the winch, a full set of tools, recovery gear and a good amount of spare parts including axles in the back so I ended up going with OME Heavies in the rear to accomodate the weight I carry.

I am happy with the ride and suspension travel I get with this setup. Give Doug at ToyTek a call, he can set you up with what you need.

You may want to consider a coilover lift as well a little more expensive but worth the money imo

I would suggest OME 886 for the front end with the Warn bumper and winch. Thats the same set up I had and it worked well. I have since replaced the Warn with a lighter Metal Tech bumper and I'm running Sway-A-Way in the front now. As for the Rear If you carry a lot of weight go with the OME heavy springs. They will minimize your articulation a little but you still have plenty. If you do not carry a lot of weight or not planning on pulling a trailer go with the medium springs.
If you have the money I would defiantly go with Sway-A-Way or Icon.

$$ is always an issue. I will be towing a trailer from time to time (Outlander Sherpa) and this is still a daily driver. Truthfully I need to replace the shocks from Revtek in the rear as I found both have started to leak. There is only about 35K on those set, so certainly not the quality I would recommend.

Any suggestions on where to pick up the OME's for the best $$? I am on budget (as is everyone right now). I was going to start replacing skids, but I think this is much more of a priority.

I would agree with Bernd on the OME spring selection. I have the same bumpers as well as Bud skids, dual batteries, Dual force winch, and the SC. I also carry a lot of gear and the Heavy's work very well for me. The front coils can be a little difficult to compress for installation but other than that it is an easy install. I also would recommend Metal Tech for a good price and great service.

amaintaylor, you sure do have a TON of weight on the front with that Dual Force winch. How bad is the fender bulge/cracking? I'm nervous about the amount of weight I want to add, and certainly don't want any cracking going on up there. I was thinking about staying as light as possible on the winch and just utilizing a Warn 8000. Still weight, and still has me nervous.

I noticed my fender cracks during my bumper and winch installation. This was even before even taking it off road. At that time Toyota said they would fix it when a repair was available. That did not happen and since then I keep adding more weight to it monthly. The fenders cant really crack too much more on mine as it goes from top to bottom. There is a larger amount of stock rigs that have this issue also. I still don't believe any mod caused the cracks. It is due to frame flex, bad body mounts, poor inner apron design and weak materials. I love my FJ but it does have weak areas that must be modified.

Sweet...even the lift thread turns into a "cracked fender" thread.....;)

I owned an 07,lemoned it/bought an '08...totaled it/ and now have an '09.....all the fenders ripped FYI.....

As far as the lift....you will NEED to do the OME or something with a new spring and shock....the spacer kit PLUS the added weight will over stress your stock spring to the point of no travel......

Have had a couple of bids in on OME heavies, and will be deciding on where to buy. My rear shocks are shot...

You couldn't have broke the new ones yet. That thing is too new. Well considering this is #3 for you I guess you are truly "FJ experienced". I hope this one lasts a while as Toyota is running out of color options for you. Also, I hope to meet you guys down there when I take my month long road trip this summer.
