Too funny. I did see something somewhat similar to that a few years ago on the beach out to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. The vehicle that had started that particular episode had already been fully submerged by the previous nights tide.
No it wasn't a Hilux, and I'm pretty sure it did not start again.
A bunch of us submerged an WWII Bren gun carrier at Iona beach - the only thing that pulled it out was a PTO on a cruiser The WARN winches on the US trucks could not winch long enough because the batteries gave out.
Worked and lived in the Gulf for 14 years including Oman and have seen some really crazy Arab stunts. I saw them many times racing with their trucks to the top of sand dunes and lots of roll overs. Most of them are young city dwellers playing on the sand dunes.
I have more respect on the Nomadic Bedouins as they don't fool around. For them it's a daily life routine being in the desert with their trucks herding their camels, sheep and goats. They camp, herd and move on.
One time I was stucked inside the Abu Dhabi desert after our company decided to replace our aging 60 LC with new Land Rover Discovery during the Gulf Storm. A Bedu pulled/rescued me with his aging 45 LC pick up truck and invited me for a "gawa" (Arabic herbal coffee) and sweet dates
