I recently purchased a 2001 LX470 and the rear bumper was damaged. It currently has a independent tow hitch receiver mounted below the rear crossmember. I have seen that later year models have the option to bolt on a receiver to the bumper cross member via 4 bolts. Mine has four holes (2 are threaded, 2 are not). It also does not have the same 2x2 hole provision for the tube of the factory bolt on receiver to pass through.
Does anyone know if the rear crossmember between the earlier and later models are different in terms of strength? Would I be able to bolt an aftermarket receiver to the crossmember, or cut the 2x2 hole and use the factor lx470 receiver.
I am likely going to build my own bumper in the next few months, but I would like to run without the damaged bumper until then, and if I am being honest, it would look a lot better if I removed the add on hitch. Really the only think I tow is a flatbed with a max gross rating of 3500...
