OK, so finally, are (red?) outside gas cans legal or not?

I have tint on my front side windows (from PO). Never gets noticed by cops, and where I park the sheriffs and transit police are always hanging out in my lot looking to catch guys crossing train tracks after the signal goes down and issuing parking tickets. But the one time I get pulled over for passing on the right side of stopped traffic (dismissed in court, thank you) the cop put me on notice for it.

Paperwork isn't worth the fixit ticket I guess? but once you're stopped, it's like bonus infractions ;)

well, gave one more phone call to my local CHP depot. Officer(who goes out on the road, not a deskjockey) also said nothing against outside cans but he didn't sound too certain. Amusingly enough, he said he would check with some 4x4 enthusiasts (officers I assumed) for verification...

So, I'm pretty satisfied that's OK here at least.

OTOH, they all talked about how the cans had to be properly secured, so a good tiedown system might get you brownie points (and be safer)...

Years ago I had a buddy that drove a heep. He had 2 cans mounted on the back. One for gas one for water. They were chrome and stamped gas and water. He was pulled over here in Reno and was told told that he had to either paint or replace the cans. Now I don't remember if this was why he was pulled over but he does usually run his mouth so it may have been lets see what else we can site you for.

As near as i can tell it's not the DMV making the new rule but The Air resources board"aka smog nazis"The thing was at least a couple of years ago the old jerry cans were legal as long as the had the new spill proof filler. The funny part was you had to have the old style cap to be DOT legal,as the spill proof caps at the time were not DOT legal.and the interstate highway system is federal .I have both red and green jerry cans the green one is labeled gas on the side. They haven't stopped me yet for it but I am sure it's just a matter of time

you guys need to stop flashing your colors...pull up your pants and turn that crappy music down and the cops prolly wouldn't even notice you...

It's those damn plaid boxers I tell ya!

Hypothetical, "Sir, I pulled you over because your gas can is green. It should be red." I say " how do you know it's a gas can?" He says " Well, it is obviously a gas can". I say "If it's obviously a gas can why does it have to be red?" He says "So we know it's a gas can"

15 years ago while working for CDF (now CalFire) this came up as an issue. The only people who had ironclad understandable rules was the military. After weeks of phone calls and talking, finally talked with the CHP Safety Officer in Sac. He was an offroader and carried jerry cans on the back of his Jeep. After he researched the issue, the only specs were the DOT regs. They basically require a spring cap and a screen to prevent flash issues. No mention of material or color
