How's this?
The blue RTV is from the PO. He has it all over this thing. I can't comment on how tho motor ran because it was not running when I got it.

looks like the oil pressure bypass spring out of the oil pump.....but idk how in the hell it could have gotten in the oil pan without being comnpletely obliterated by oil pump gears.

or...........i know the timing chain tensioner is oil pressure driven, but isnt there a spring in there too? seems plauible that if you had a really loose chain, it could shoot out and drop a spring straight down into the oil pan.

thats about all i got though

I think you got it. Timing chain tensioner spring. The tensioner was completely destroyed. Good thing I am replacing the front end. Thanks for the help.
Cheers.

sounds good.

if you are planning on reusing the timing cover, i would give it a real good once over. if the chain tensioner is that chewed up, chances are the cover is screwed too.

good luck with the rebuild. dont forget to label the location of each of the timing cover bolts if you dont have it all apart already (they are all different lengths) and to put FIPG on the one oil pump bolt that goes all the way through the timing cover to stop leaks

Thanks for the tip. Got it all back together, replaced the timing cover, oil pump, water pump, rear main seal, etc. only broke off one bolt in the water pump so I feel lucky. Think I over torqued them to start with. Had trouble finding a torque wrench that would go down to below 10 ftlbs, but found one at Napa for $35. Next week we will try to put her back in the engine bay.
