ok so sorry to be the a****** again but i suggest anyone that likes this sort of stuff underestand the law of consevation of energy. for this process to be usefull, it has to give more energy out as put in. the plastic already had the potencial energy that was put in it as processed plus the original potencial energy gained from the sun as the original oil out of the ground. there are machines that burn waste plastic efficiently without too much polution. if you put further enegry in it with this supper machine, you just wasted your time as you could have used that energy to start with.

it reminds me of the people that decompose water to burn the hydrogen in their car. even if you were 100% efficent (wich you are not) you still wasted your time as you only get out what you put in.

if you want to actualy get ahead, then you must use the law of coservation of MASS and energy. but the hippies dont like that s***.
 
You completely missed the point. It's not about how efficient it is, or much energy it uses. It was designed to remove plastic waste from the garbage system and create something useful with it as an alternative to recycling.

I don't think anyone's suggesting we make a bunch of plastic for the sole purpose of later turning it into oil with this machine.

The point here is that the plastic is essentially free because it's on its way to the dump. It doesn't matter how efficient or inefficient its creation was; it's free now. If making oil out of it with (presumably) electricity is cheaper than buying new oil then the thing's a slam dunk. If it costs more, then it's a question of whether that extra cost is offset by diversion of waste from the landfill.

Or, it could be a question of availability. If you have no oil but one of these machines and a buttload of plastic lying around the choice would be pretty clear.

In any case, there's still fossil energy within the plastic that is being recovered - energy that was neither created nor destroyed during the oil to plastic transition.

I hear what you're saying about electrolyzing water for the sole purpose of burning the hydrogen back to water though. In this example the whole process is just a storage mechanism, not dissimilar to a battery. There's no fossil or other "free" energy being recovered; you simply get back slightly less than you put in to begin with.
 
Their website claims a 1.2 kWhr/kg waste which produces 0.7 l oil (approx 7 kWhr equivalent energy). Sounds like a good idea if it really works.
