gday
i think i know the answer here but here goes
1997 troopie 1 HZ (stock everything) car has done 360,000 motor has done around 230,000 - and from new has not really done any serious work (no towing or heavy loads)
Car starts up hot or cold straight away -barely turns over before firing up, when not towing does not use any oil at all and blows no smoke
I have started using for a bit of towing and noticed it really chews the oil when towing (like 3 -4 litres in the last 2 months) - it is towing a heavy boat (circa 2.5 ton) once a week but not very far, but it is really working hard when pulling the boat
-i guess the easy answer here is.......dont use it to tow boat!!!

Any other insight would be appreciated but for the time being she will be used as my city chariot and no more towing!
cheers
Bill

Hi Bill, I think your engine need to be overhauled. It is a serious problem if you lost 3-4 litres since you just tow with it once a week (8-9 times in 2 months). Do you feel underpower when you're towing? 2.5 ton is not a heavy tow for a 1hz. For comparison, I usually carry that load on my pick-up and it just lost half litre for 5000km.

yeah i think she may be a little tired - i took boat over weigh bridge and its 2.8 ton - either way she really struggles to pull it - as for under powered - yes, she has 33tyres on her which will throw the gearing out a bit - but going up a moderate hill i was down to 30kmh in second gear..... traffic behind not happy!

i think i leave the boat for my 100 series to pull :-)

Id say shes about due. i can do 80km in 4th up the dreaded coquihalla pass here in BC. And thats a 3b with 320+km... Not sure how long mine will last. goes through about a litre every 3000km +- depending on load etc
