10 off-roaders rescued in Lake Forest

From wire service reports
Posted: 03/16/2009 07:02:02 AM PDT

LAKE FOREST - Ten off-roaders who got stuck on a narrow trail near Santiago Peak were rescued Sunday.

The nine men and a teenager, all from Lake Forest, were off-roading in two trucks Saturday night when one of the trucks, which did not have four-wheel drive, got stuck. The four-wheel drive truck behind it was unable to pass, the Orange County Register reported.

One of the men, who had a cellphone, called the Orange County Sheriff's Department about 11 p.m., said Lt. Fred Furey of the Sheriff's Department. The cellphone battery died immediately after the call, Furey said.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department sent a helicopter, but the search was called off when conditions became too foggy, the Register reported.

The 10 off-roaders spent the night sleeping in their trucks and outside, according to the Register.

At sunrise, sheriff's deputies resumed the search on foot and in off- road vehicles. Deputies found the off-roaders, who were in good condition, around 9 a.m. and helped them extricate their vehicles, the Register reported.

"You really need to know what your vehicle can do," Furey told the Register. "Regular trucks are not made to go into this terrain."

wait until some group start clamoring to close it all up to protect the idiots from themselves...

Yep, unfortunately it doesn't take too much attention to ruin it for everyone else....

Dave that link didn't say anything more than your first post. I read it in the paper and was wondering where they were. Clearly not on the approved trails, ie fire roads. Any idea where? Hopefully these idiots don't cause too much damage to the rest of us responsible wheelers.

Mo.. How weird, i could of sworn this said different the first time i read it..

"Trucks are allowed to drive on the trail, Furey said, which is a regular path that off roaders use. None of the men were cited."

Can they change the text in an article? I could of sworn the first time i read it said they were in a area that was closed.

:meh: :D
