I believe the compass wont work with out the part that goes in place of the second row reading lamp and harness, correct? Or is this one different?

Correct; apparently it's inaccurate anyways and not worth the drama of dropping headliner to install compass module.

Yes, the sensor is needed for the compass. And yes, it is a pain to pull/install.
