Hey folks:

I have 1971 and 1972 FJ40s that had factory grommets (I even have one of the original plastic plugs used to fill those grommets) and headrest mounts in the driver and passenger seats (see photos). I bought the 72 FJ40 first, and I thought the holes were probably “breathers” to release air in the seat backs when someone sits on them. When I took those seats apart to reupholster them, I saw the headrest mounts in the seat backs. I found a pair of OEM headrests that fit the seats and added them (see photos; I need to go back and add 1/2” grommets to the seat backs). I mentioned the headrest mounts and headrests in my 1971 & 1972 FJ40s, and he said he had never seen headrests or grommets in 71 or 72 FJ40s.

This prompted me to post this information and ask how many folks out there have seen at least the grommets in the seat backs of 1971 & 1972 FJ40s. My understanding is that the headrests were required for export in some countries but not the US. I suppose headrests could have been an option for those years in the US that was rarely chosen. I guess I’m really just curious how common these pre-bucket seat headrests are and if anyone knows anything more about them.

Thanks for looking, and I hope to get some responses.

Cheers!

Reuben

That looks really cool. I've know about them, but have never been able to find an "original" pair. I'd say it's pretty rare and uncommon to find them within the USA. I sent mine off to get upholstered, so I didn't get the chance to see if the gromet holes existed underneath and the guy that upholstered them didn't leave the access holes open. But according to oem Toyota charts, the option to install headrests should be there:
