I am not quite sure what you mean by not making it down your driveway, is your 40 using up the regular amount of fuel??? if it is...The strectches are not as long as you think. You should be fine with your tank full. You might bring an additional jerry can with fuel and that should be more than enough.

Ok so here is what I suggest for a route.

The first group departing on Thursday can try to meet in cedar island (South of OBX) and take the ferry over to ocracoke. You guys can chose to spend the night in cedar island and take the ferry to Ocrakoke early friday morning or if you arrive early at cedar island you can try catching the ferry into ocrakoke an spend the night there.

All friday your goal is to travel North. stopping for lunch, cape hatteras, scenic views and beach driving along the way until you reach nags head.

The idea is to join both groups in Nags Head. For friday night and set camp/hotel there. Saturday morning the idea is to travel north and driving through corolla heading towards carova as far as we can drive. As Joe said earlier this will be the best 4x4 experience of the whole trip due to the remoteness of the area. It seems you can drive into VA but we will go as far as time allows. Hopefully we well come accross wild horses and fishing opportunities. I believe there are 20 miles of beach driving with plenty of exploration oportunities. driving into the land opposite to the beach. Saturday night if spent in the corolla area will be the most primitive and as Joe said although we will be really camping we are in theory fishing all night. Sunday we will head down and come into land through manteo at which point we will head home. Or we could cross the virginia border and come home via 85.

here at some links of importance:

ocrakoke to hatteras ferry schedule:

I haven't driven all the way up the coast to Virginia for a long while, but I seem to recall you couldn't cross into the state? I believe at or near the VA border the beach turns into a wildlife preserve?

Regardless we will likely have the beach to ourselves, it's like 13 miles of no road.

Please note Juans previous post regarding ideas for the OBX trip, we would like to be able to let everyone know at the march meeting the plan/itinerary for the trip. Please post up your experiences and what you feel works best for the club so we can try and accomodate everyone. Club will have a group dinner Friday night, so if you plan to attend let us know around what time you will be arriving.

Sounds like a good one, wish I could make it. My brother is getting married that weekend so no-can-do for me.

Juan - As you know, we get over there 5-6 times a year. We were just there and will be back not long after this trip.

If you have any questions, let me know. I'll be glad to try and help.

Obligatory questions: is this ride limited to Club members? If not, is this ride limited to only Yoters? How many people can we accomodate?

This is a ONSC event, intended for it's members and family. We are first and foremost making this expedition at the request of our members and are making the decisions regarding the trip based on those that have posted up there arrival and departure dates. Logistics for this trip will be based on an "early" and "late" arrival, early group will be leaving sometime in the middle of the week and late arrival will be arriving sometime midafternoon evening friday.

The link that I posted to the beach closure to vehicles, has anyone done any additional research to make sure that trip will be ON?

Kudos on having the trip regardless, the drive on the sand to the state line and back to the pavement is a fun afternoon.

Andy I was just commenting on the fact that we had already decided the trip will go on. I was talked over on the mailing list. The response was not directed to your post. That was pretty informative thanks for posting

Yep, no problem Juan. This thing is far from over and like you said, it has been going on for a long time.

I just wish I could go on this trip, it is going to be great!!

Andy are you not coming?? I think you should/... it is going to be an awesome trip, who is going to be my next chatting victim?? I wont be able to pull my usual 5am talks..LOL Reading further it says that if they rule the closing it is only going to be 12 miles out 46 total... So my guess is that even in worst case scenario there will still be plenty of places available for beach driving. Also there are other great sites and things to do besides driving on the beach.

I'm in and planning to bring the whole family (wife, kids, dog). We'll head out from Raleigh on Friday morning because I'd like to look around Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills before dark. Unfortunately, we won't be roughing it and plan to find hotels for Friday and Saturday. Can anyone give recommendations, particularly for Saturday around Corolla?

Clint

Hey Clint, we can get a caravan from the Raleigh area Friday morning, if folks are interested - that's when I'm heading over.

Not sure what your budget is, but we've stayed at the Corolla Inn before and really enjoyed it. Very relaxing and comfortable inn in a great location. I'm sure others will be have other recommendations.
