I purchased my 2007 GX470 in January of 2025. The reason for the "build" title is that it won't be much of a build, just maintenance and small modifications. Not very interesting when compared to some of the real builds on this forum!

It had 265k miles but a ton of maintenance records, including 2 timing belts, and a ton of odds and ends. The previous owner didn't do any maintenance himself but kept it in good shape. The reason he was selling was he was upgrading to a 460.

This is a CT car so there is rust underneath, but "for CT", not bad. It is all surface rush. I'll describe it this way: If you wack the frame with a big hammer small flakes will fall off but no holes. So safety glasses are a must when working underneath!!

He had GX460 wheels on it, and LED bulbs everywhere, which was great. One less thing for me to do. The rest if the truck was stock.

Here are some pics from when I purchased it.

I don't have any inside, but the front drivers seat was ripped, and the passenger seat was rough. The rear and third row were in great condition. The steering wheel leather was also rough as can be expected with a truck with so many miles.

As I do with all the cars I purchased, I made a list of all the most urgent maintenance needed. Unfortunately I didn't take many pics.

But here is the big list; I'm a do it yourself er so I did it all myself unless otherwise noted. What sucks the most about this truck is that it is too tall for my garage so I have to work out in the driveway.

  • Cabin / Engine Filters
  • Cat back exhaust (Big leak) - Went with a cheap SS on Ebay, Unfortunately 1+ year later and it is already leaking but I loved that it was super quiet, not looking for a loud exhaust
  • Ripped off the rain guards, didn't like them at all even though looked like good quality
  • New Amazon engine splash guards (great fitment)
  • Passed Emissions (Yay)
  • Front / Rear / Transfer Case Fluid change (All Toyota fluids)
  • Transmission Fluid change (100%) with pan drop and filter change (Toyota Fluid) - Yes I know this is controversial, but so far so good
  • Replaced rusted Tank straps
  • CV Axle Rebuild kit (OEM Toyota kit) - Did this since still had OEM Toyota CV axles. Unfortunately I'm not very good at clamping - one of them is leaking from my clamp (not torn) So will have to address that soon.
Most of the above was done soon after purchasing, the below was done a little later as needed:

  • TPMS Disable (Thanks all who posted about it!!)
  • OEM Upper and Lower Control arms ($$) but based on popular opinion, one of those where OEM is better
  • Tie Rod ends and Sway bar end links - Didn't go OEM on these since my wallet was hurting from the above
  • Bilstein 5100 shocks all around - Only one click from lowest setting, I think my springs are tired so almost like a leveling kit
  • Radiator / Thermostat / Cap / Hoses / Belt Tensioner / Pulley / Belt - This was urgent since it sprung a leak.. Getting that damn fan off after stripping a bolt SUCKED!!! Lots of Dremel work!!
  • Alternator - Had to farm this out, I didn't have time and didn't know what was wrong. It sounded like power steering fluid was low but the fluid was filled. I brought it to a shop, they replaced the power steering pump, then called and said that wasn't the cause of the sound. They replaced the alternator and it fixed it.... Glad I didn't do this myself, I'm not so great at troubleshooting
That about wraps up the Maintenance section! Sorry no pics

Now for what I consider the more fun stuff!

  • TRD Bronze Wheels with takeoff General Grappler 265/70/17 from a new bronco (only 20 miles on them!)
  • Painting Headlights and Lens replacement
  • Black window weatherstripping 4 doors and painting the rear quarter chrome
  • Painting the grill
  • Full decontamination, clay, Polish (2 stage), touching up the hundreds of stone chips and scratches and ceramic coating
I am an amateur detailing geek, so I really enjoyed polishing the truck and the improvement was drastic. I don't think the previous owner ever polished much less washed it!!

Now my list was almost complete, except for the stuff I dreaded the most... The front seats and steering wheel. The drivers seat was ripped and very badly aged, and the passenger was well worn. The rear and 3rd row was still in very good condition.

I got Amazon seat covers (replacement covers, so removal and re-installation) and arm rest covers for my birthday, so all that was left was the install. Luckily there were plenty of Youtube vids on the subject and I purchased a good angled hog ring tool, some hog rings, and a tagging tool (for the re-installation of the heating elements.

I also bought a steering wheel restoration kit which worked great. I didn't use the filler because I thought it would fail the quickest so the wheel isn't perfect, but it is such a huge improvement I am happy with it.

These two upgrades drastically improve the daily feel and satisfaction when driving everyday. It feels like a new truck (except for the old ass Navi setup).

I also changed the front and rear brakes and rotors today, I thought of upgrading to gx460 kit but nothing wrong with these for now. We'll see about when they need to be replaced again.

I've now spent so much money on this truck I will never get it back, so I guess I have to keep it forever.

The best part is that I like it so much, I cringe at the fact that I am teaching my daughter to drive in this vehicle!!!

Very clean looking GX! Mine came from CT too - it was purchased from Lexus of Greenwich in the Spring of 2007 before somehow making it's way to the Midwest. I found the business card for the original sales guy in the owner's manual :).
