NV 4500 gear shift

Has anyone out there pulled the gear shift lever out of an NV 4500? It must be easier than what it looks like after I take off the boot. Okay, what's the trick?

Remove the 4 bolts that hold it in place and lift it out. It's been a year or more but that's what I remember. Simple.
