Hi Guys
I just finished a top end rebuild. Car runs great and I've got so much more power. Since this FJ ran poorly when I got it, I don't know what a good running FJ sounds like.
I have a funny, almost exhaust sounding, sound coming from the front, driver side of engine. Is this normal? Is this just the smog pump?

It sounds like you're pumping air in to the air cleaner, check your air pump connections as they may be reversed.

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me. If you take a piece of hose or tubing and hold it to your ear and pass the other end around in there you should be able to pin point it.

After completing the engine work, as if the exhaust leak sound wasn't enough, I now noticed a wet looking leak at the exhaust cooler. Any takers? Could this all be related?

I'm glad Toyota designed in easy access to the manifold bolts, even with the carb and all the other stuff in place. I loosened the bolts, applied some oil to the threads and retorqued and that fixed the problem. Leak was coming from loose manifold. Whew!
