So, I had a 2011 4Runner that I loved that unfortunately got totaled. I have been floating around the forums with the idea for buying an FJ60/62 for a while. I think I am ready to pull the trigger. I bought my wife a new car to get me a free pass for whatever I wanted and I have her 2015 Prius that I can use as a daily driver. I had been thinking about a project rig to build, but this forum convinced me that my lack of wrenching knowledge means I should be paying for a well kept version that I can keep up and learn what I am doing. I also have minor delusions of an engine swap, but that's not the reason I'm looking to buy.

I've found two that are around $26K-$28K, with the cheaper one seeming to be a clear front runner:
  1. 1988 FJ62 $26K - Guy's wife doesn't like this as her daily driver, so he is reselling it after buying it 6 months ago. The prior owner was a mechanic who did a fair amount of work on the car, including the following from the prior listing: soundproofing in the doors, 4Runner heated seats, new aluminum radiator, and new wheels and tires. Apparently the prior owner took apart the engine and found it in good shape, so he just resealed it. The current owner thinks the prior owner also redid the brakes. No rust to speak of, but it looks like it'll need a new paint job at some point. The electric power works for windows but not the side mirrors.
  2. 1988 FJ62 $27K - Well maintained, no rust to speak of, good paint job, and the engine sounds good. New battery and tires, but none of the other additions mentioned above. There is a slow ATF leak (~10-15 drops a day) and the knuckles need a rebuild. The interior needs work, too. The leak means it'll have to be parked outside until I can get it fixed. Not electric windows, etc., which makes me feel better than the electric.
With the first one being cheaper with more options feels like the best option and the price seems reasonable based on everything I have seen, but I wanted to get outside opinions. I think I could get a price drop on the second one, but I know I'll be buying some work that needs to be done. Probably can't get below like $22K-23K, if I had to guess.

All thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!
