Is the bj74 known for t case noise in 4X?
If I remove the front drive line and engage in high or low range 4X4 with the hubs locked (manuals) I get no noise.
When I put the front drive line back in (joints and shaft are good and in synch) I get a grinding like noise which is worse on deceleration ...if I unlock the hubs I still get the noise.
If I go out of 4X4 the noise goes away.
No noise from cv's and diff oil is good.

I'm a mechanic by trade and would hate to drop a t-case unless I have to....any help is greatly apprecialted.

Is there a t-case with lower gearing or different gears I can put in to get a lower range for crawling???

Hi Marco ,as far a t/cases go,the split case is quiet compared to most. Usually they get a on/off droning noise at freeway speeds but yours happens in 4x4.
Some people dont understand what part time 4x4 means and drive around in 4x4 with the hubs locked on the road.Maybe the PO has done that. We use to get quite a few through here that needed it explained.

Is it possible it is not engaging 4x4 properly?

My front diff is noisy when I have the hubs locked in on the road in 4x2

Marks Adapters and Marlin Crawler gears are the 2 big names in t/case gear reduction.
You could also fit the factory 2.296 gears if you dont already have them. I think most 70 series after 85 do have them.

Thanks Rosco
There is no noise when I drive i 2X4 with the hubs locked...I also know that you should not engage 4high if the hubs are not locked ( front and rear drive shafts not in sych)
The front diff also has the cable locker and it does not make any difference in noise locked or not

Maybe I will have to do some work at home on this baby....

A good time to check things over and have a little fun!!!!

It sounds like the front output shaft bearing on the transfercase

Sounds about right...will get some gaskets and start taking apart.

Will keep you updated...

Will also look for lower gears in the case.
