on my 92 p/u i have recently noticed a noise when in 4wd @ highway speeds when i let off the gas pedal. mostly in 5th gear, sometimes in 4th. it sounds much like engine noise, only slightly louder. the cv boots aren't torn and as best as i can tell, the ujoints on the driveshaft are fine. the noise sounds like it's coming from the passenger-side front tire area.

ideas?

It sounds like a ujoint problem. Take the shaft off and check them because it's hard to tell with it on. Last time I replaced them I think they were around $15 a ujoint from napa.

could also be problem in the 3rd. Or the front output bearing.

How fast are you going????

How long has it been since you changed the diff fluid? OFTEN times the front diff is not changed.

Could be a U joint although I doubt it unless you/past owners used the 4wd a lot. But it could be.

Mileage on truck?

60mph tops
diff fluid was changed when the 4.88s were put in. probably 3-4 years ago, but very little mileage on the front diff in that time.
total mileage on the truck is less than 120,000.

as far as the comment about not driving at highway speeds in 4wd, what do you suggest for highway trips with compact snow on the road???

Exactly just because they live in places that when it snows an inch the entire world stops :flipoff2:

I drive my 4runner 65+ on expressways covered in snow and its smooth as glass.

constant velosity on the front drive shaft .... try greasing the crap out of it , but it's most likely the first signs of wear .

i checked oil levels and greased the ujoints today. the front diff needed 1/3 of a quart, but not enough to cause the problem i don't think. i think it is most likely to be CVs unless the manual hubs could somehow be the culprit, but they either work or they don't, right? the passenger side hub is a bit harder to turn the driver's side, but that's how it's been since i put them in a few years back.

hubs wont do it ... diff fluid , well unless it's been like that for quite a while , might cause on "decell" or lifting off the gas pedal . at those "speeds" I would be more likely to think the CV on the front drive shaft .. climb under .. grab it , and push up , twist it , and try again .. there should be NO movement at all ..

i'll try that tomorrrow. i have tried turning the wheels fully in 4wd in both directions in 1st gear and reverse as recommended by someone else and no sound at all from the CVs. apparently that is the telltale way to determine if they need replacing.
