Recently i bought an 87 4runner of a buddy and for a while its been having a starting issue. Turn the key and you get a click. OK leads you to believe the starter(which was only a few months old). Took that in, tests ok, but got it replaced anyway. Slap the new starter on and.... click. Now the funny thing is, when a starter clicks its probly stuck so u tap it with a hammer right. Did that with the first starter and then the truck will start. So after the new starter still jus clicks... tapped it with a hammer and it starts... WTH?

Ideas?

My 88 did a similar thing. I figured it was starter contacts, so I pulled them out and cleaned them up with a file and sandpaper. Also sanded the ring on the plunger, put them back and I was good for a while, but just every now and then I'd get the click.

I just did this mod from RAD4Runnerhttp://www.yotatech.com/f199/rad4runners-1986-4runner-dlx-build-up-252300/index3.html#post51975700

Basically, he is saying that some fairly high current is flowing thru your ignition contacts. I took the easy way out, I snipped the wire he suggests, soldered in a new wire that runs thru a 10A fuse straight to the battery.
