I took my 03LC to the car wash today for the first time. I've been the owner for 3 weeks.

Standard drive-through car wash. When I went to vacuum it out and wipe it down afterwards, I noticed there was water coming down from the far right and left sides of the under side of the dash. More pronounced on the PS, with a light, steady drip, and barely a drip on the DS, but noticeable coming from around the gas tank and hood latch hinges.

When I got home, I parked it, and came back out about 20 minutes later, and saw that the hazards were blinking. I went in and tried to switch off the hazards, but they remained on no matter what I did. I came inside and read the threads about people that have had non-stop flashing hazards, so I'm aware this is an issue. I pulled the fuse for now, but looking for viable long term solutions.

Issue number one is obviously the water ingress. It should be noted I do not have the outer seal on my sunroof that runs around the roof of the car.

Issue two is what do I do about the non-stop blinking hazards whether the Cruiser is on or off?

Thanks for any advice on this one.

1. Aftermarket windshield? If yes, check how the two trim pieces are installed on the left and right side of the glass. Should be plastic coated rivets. Anything else can mean water ingress through the rivet holes in the A pillar.
2. Verify moon roof drains are not clogged. Open it fully and spot the hole on each side. Pour water down and see where it ends up. The moon roof glass seal is designed to pass water into the drain channels. Its not a water tight seal.
3. Let they truck dry out and hope the hazard issue stops. You can dig further and see how much corrosion is in the fuse boxes if you want to be terrified.

My gut is botched windshield trim install.

@Rhetoric agreed that should be investigated asap. I checked my windshield and didn’t see any Toyota markings so I’m guessing it’s aftermarket. I’ll look now for the rivets on the trim.

Are the plastic rivets on the inside or outside of the glass? @Rhetoric

Now to deal with the non-stop blinking hazards….

Rivets are in the trim on each pillar. 50/50 chance they are covered with a rubber trim strip.

@DIRTBIKEUSA interesting, as my VSC kicks on almost far too sensitively.

Following this. I'm having electrical issues that I fear were caused by a leak and resulting PCB corrosion. Does anyone have instructions on how to remove the driver's side junction box under the kick plate?

@hysteria357

The good news for me is that my Cruiser is back to normal, no more nonstop blinking hazards. Everything has had time to fully dry out. At this point my main priority is getting my windshield re-sealed. I may even put in a new OEM windshield just to be totally sure this is a 1 and done situation.

That's good to know. I still want to pull and check as much as possible since I have some things that don't work (key fob unlocking and alarm going off when using key), so something is dead. Before I throw in a new BCM or lock controller I wanted to further diagnose.

Also need to get the windshield re-sealed. I have some rust bubbles on the A pillar which I recently fixed but I fear what I'm going to see when the windshield comes off...

When my gremlins were at their peak Monday afternoon, about 2 hours after I got out of the car wash, the hazards wouldn't stop blinking and my locks were switching on and off, randomly, with me in the car when it was running.

I'm avoiding car washes for the near future. Last time I went through a car wash it caused my traction control to kick on randomly, but I know my wheel speed sensors are bad. When it gets very wet is also when the alarm oddities begin.

Its usually the trim pieces causing the issues. The windshields themselves rarely leak as glass guys can handle that part. Its the trim rivets that they fail incredibly hard on. By either messing up the rivets, using screws, or just coating with urethane and calling it a day.

If you have glass coverage check into getting it all replaced. I have $0 deductible glass coverage and was able to get new OEM windshield and all associated trim completely covered at no cost to me.

Good to know. Never considered using insurance. I'm trying to plan for the scenario where the windshield is removed and it's all rusted underneath. I doubt they'll let me drive it home for me to fix 😁
