Newbie Q: prepping dings & scratches for touchup paint?

Folks,

wanting to pretty up the LX470 for xmas, and I've noticed a few scratches here and there that are starting to oxidate a bit - any recommended practices, or just paint right on over? (sounds sloppy, which is why im askin )

paint better than nothing, but not as good as removing the rust and priming first...

I like Dremels for this kinda stuff

Congrats on the sale of the 100 and nice upgrade too.
I need to touch-up some spots on my 80, that's why I looked at this thread. My idea is to use a high build primer and then airbrush the spots (after masking off surrounding areas of course). Most touch-up paint jobs look just like, well, touch-up paint jobs. I like e9999's idea of a dremel to get down to bare metal.
It may be more than you want to get into, just an idea.

Anybody ever use an airbrush for touch-ups?

If you have the pearl finish on your LX and are using the dealer touch-up paint, it likely won't look anything like the stock finish. The pearl is a 3-coat paint (base, midcoat, clear). The number of layers of the midcoat control the darkness of the paint (base won't resemble the finished product until you apply the mid). I did some touch-up work (pearl) on my LX using touch up from paintscratch.com (primer, base, mid, then clear coat). The final color match is amazing. Other than not getting the thickness correct (no way to without spraying), it's a perfect match.

X2 on the paintscratch.com product, just used it on both vehicles and the color match is perfect.
