I have a 73 55 that has been converted to automatic. The previous owner said it is "geared low" for trails but I will be using it as a daily driver so I need it to be able to drive on the highway at a higher speed.

I don't know much about mechanics and need help understanding "geared low" and how to change that. Do I need to be looking for a mechanic that can change gears in the transmission or the differential?

Also, what gears are used to correct this? I appreciate all help an advice.

Thanks,

John

If you feel you need numerically lower (highway) gears, you could swap 3rd members from a '79 & up FJ40 or FJ62 as they had 3.70's. You'll have to keep your pinion flanges & swap those to the later model 3rd members. Either that or run taller tires.

What "automatic" are you running. If it is a modern 4 speed you should have overdrive that will help at highway speeds.

What size tires are on the pig?

If you want the best of both worlds you need 3.70 gears in your axles then look to add a doubler. The reduction box off a Np 203 are a toy box if your one of those guy that like all toyota. Check out my albem if you want to see the doubler. What motor and trans are you going to run? Pm me if you want to avoid all the arm chair builders speculating.

pinion flanges from a 73 won't fit on 79 and later diffs. fine pinion vs.course pinion. either have to do universal round pinion flange from marlin or kurt or someone, or swap entire slip shaft from donor rig.
